A biography would be a good choice as he wants non-fiction, no autobiographies/biographies by/on still living individuals; no how to/DIY books; etc. Any suggestions? The total pages we have to read is 1000. Not necessarily just one book. My first choice is Japan’s War by Edwin Hoyt. I just need a shorter book to complete the 1000 page requirement. He will orally quiz us one on one. Thank you!

One of the best reasons for writing articles is to get traffic to your webiste and lots of it, but you won’t attract much traffic with boring content, ramblings and regurgitated ideas that no one cares about.

Your articles must be interesting, easy to read and spark interest.

How can you do that? Here are a few tips:

1. Forget what you Learned in English Class

Internet surfers are skimmers, they want something that is easy to read and gets to the point fast. When it comes to paragraphs, shorter is better and each paragraph should consist of about 3-5 sentences. The last thing they want to read are big long run-on sentences, even if they belong together it’s easier to read if you break them up. Keep your words simple, get to the point quickly and don’t ramble or get preachy.

One thing you do need to remember from English class is make your writing understandable. I do this by speaking what I write. After you write it, say it out loud. If it doesn’t make sense to you, it won’t make sense to anyone else.

2. Use a Catchy Title

Your title is what lures your reader in. It must capture their attention and incite intrigue. This means using powerful, descriptive words. For example, the title of this article is “8 hard-hitting article writing tips’. ‘Hard-hitting’ is a powerful description of these tips. Get the idea?

Remember also that your title should reflect exactly what your article is about, so keep it relevant and focused.

3. Skip the Broad Topics

There’s nothing worse than a broad topic with little detail. Keep your article focused on one specific topic and then follow through with informative details. Deliver good information in an expert manner. If you have too many topics running through your head, break them up into separate articles. If you are a little foggy about what details to include, ask yourself the who, what, when, where, why and how questions for ideas.

Additionally, keep your ideas flowing in a logical manner, don’t jump around. Your article should flow like smooth running water.

4. Stir up Some Action

Light a fire under your reader by using action words. This means avoiding words like was, were, can, maybe, are, am, may, could, should, etc. Bring your message alive with action words like get, find, will, do, must, go, run, drive, etc. The idea is to bring forth a powerful message that adds enthusiasm and provokes action. Don’t be wishy-washy with your ideas. Project a powerful, authoritative, say what you mean voice.

5. Deliver Quality over Quantity

When submitting your articles to a directory, use the minimum number of words it requires. If a directory requires of minimum of 500 words and your article is 1000 words, split it up into two articles. The more articles you can submit the better. Having more articles is better than having larger articles.

6. Show Some Personality for cryin’ out loud

Let’s face it, articles can be dull. Just read some of the articles out there and you’ll see what I mean. You’ll get a lot more feedback and interest if you can interject some personality in your writing. If you are a funny person, let that humor come through. Even a little sarcasm or controversy can add to a reader’s enjoyment and help put them at ease.

No one wants dull, so let your personality reflect a ‘spark of spirit’ that will help your reader better engage in your article.

7. Funnel Your Readers

Forget the bio pitch. Your articles are not the best place for them; leave that to your website. Instead use your article’s resource box to funnel your readers to your website. If they liked what they read in your article they will likely want to see more. Use your resource box to lead them there by attracting them with something of value. For example, your resource box might say something like this:

- get your free course here…

- learn more about xyz here…

- get more articles like this here…

The idea is to channel your readers to your website, not pitch your bio. At this point no one really cares. Get them to your site first.

8. Grammar and Spelling Count

Ever read an article with poor grammar and spelling errors? It’s a bit of a turn-off. It diminishes your professionalism and authority. That’s why you must use spell checker, particularly after making article changes or updates. Keep in mind; however that spellchecker may not pick up errors for words like ‘there’ and ‘their’ so give your articles a good eye-balling before submitting them.

As for your grammar, you don’t have to follow every rule of grammar but you don’t want to sound like a first grader either. Don’t be sloppy; take the time to read over your article for good punctuation and a style of grammar that projects intelligence yet lets your personality shine through.

Non stick cookwares are an indispensible part of our household due to its easy cooking and cleaning properties, less oil requirement as well as capacity for evenly transmitting the heat across the cookware. Improved techniques of non stick coatings have led to different grades of non-stick cookware.

There are various non-stick cookwares ranging from single, thin layer of non-stick coating to dual layer non-stick cookware. Single coated non-stick cookwares might begin to peel off after repeated use, and are targeted to mass market use. Dual layer non-stick cookwares are more resistant to scratching and peeling and with proper care should last longer than a single layer.

Experts recommend cooking in non-stick cookware since food prepared in non-stick cookware is less oily as well as saves fuel. It is recommended to cook with low-to-medium heat with nonstick cookware. Do not leave empty nonstick cookware on a burner, as it will get hot quickly and may begin to release harmful fumes.

These non stick cookware are real value for money, they offer efficient craftsmanship. Available in various shapes and sizes such as kadhai, frying pan, handis, pressure cookware etc. These range of cookware require less time as well as highly durable.

Easy to clean and maintain they are found in every household since they signify style as well as hygiene.  So search your desired non-stick cookware brand in a mall and decorate your kitchen.

Various brands are available in market dealing in non stick cookware such as Teflon, Silverstone, Tfal, Debron etc. Avail your set of cookwares and enjoy cooking.

Science fiction has inspired many block-buster movies. Star Wars, Matrix and Terminator are some of the movies that are based on science fiction. In fact, many scientific discoveries were first imagined in science fiction literature only. Robots were first featured in children’s fiction books during the start of the twentieth century. They eventually became a reality during the later part of the twentieth century.

Unlike other types of fictions, the science fiction books feature technological innovations that have not become a reality. Most of the present day fiction books discuss about time-machines, inter-stellar travel and flying cars. These are as innovative a concept as Robots were during the start of the twentieth century. Who knows, these science fiction machines may eventually become a part of our daily life in not too far future.

Robert Jordan’s “Popular Wheel of Time,” “Lord of the Rings” and “Star Trek” are among the all time favourite science fiction books. Joe R. Lansdale’s “Flaming London” is among the best selling fiction books of the present time. The book presents us with a postmodern alternate earth in its Victorian period. The main carryover character of the book is Ned the Seal. A mere seal in body, Ned has been experimented on by Dr. Momo and is now a highly intelligent being. Ned has thumbs grafted into his flippers so that he may communicate with humanity with his omnipresent slate. In fact, most of the book is narrated by Ned himself.

Leading book publishers come up with new science fiction books every now and then. In fact there is a multi-billion industry that is based on science fiction books. These days, DVD and CD versions of these books are also available at retailers across the world. These books and their DVD/CD versions are also available at leading online book stores of the UK like Bookworm and Amazon UK at highly attractive bargain prices.

Writing an introduction can become a nightmare even for an experienced writer. To tell the truth, I spent some time thinking before I started writing this article. It’s a normal situation. You get an assignment, and a topic is pretty easy. By saying easy I mean that you know what to write about in an essay paper. There are some thoughts in your head, and you are calm and ready…. But when it comes to writing an essay, a big “Oops!!!” pops ups. It seems like you know the problem, but what to start with? There is so much you want to tell, but this introduction writing just freaks you out.

Does this situation look familiar to you? Paulo Coelho, a world-famous Brazilian author, once confessed that sometimes it takes him days to start writing: “I wake up, drink coffee, open my notebook and wait…. Then a take walk, or do other ordinary things. In the evening I approach my notebook again. When I finally start writing, I can’t stop myself. I work late into the night, and before falling asleep I try to write down all the ideas to empty my head.” And these are the words of an experienced writer! So instead of whining and complaining, or, which is worse, feeling depressed, get to your essay writing! Here are some introduction writing tips for you.

First of all, it’s a common mistake that you should begin writing an essay from the introduction part. Skillful essay writers will tell you, that introduction writing can be the last thing you need to do. It’s better to explore the problem first. Get all the facts, thoughts and opinions together, evaluate them, put them in right places, and write a conclusion. If you do so, writing an introduction will be an easy job. You already know what you are talking about in your essay writing. It’s easy to make a little preview of the text in the introduction writing. Sometimes you state something in an Introduction (or don’t know what to state), and them start writing an essay and realize that you want to talk about different aspects of the issue, and you’ve got more facts on these, rather than those stated in an introduction writing. As a result, you have to start everything over again. Save your time and efforts by planning your essay writing.

If you are not used to this way of writing an essay, make tentative introduction writing. It will let you write what you think is right, and then go back and correlate content of an essay paper with its introduction. If you think that introduction writing doesn’t correspond with the concept of the entire essay paper, you can easily alter it.

Since you saved enough time, think about a catchy beginning. Introduction writing is the face of your essay paper. From the first two sentences your readers will understand, whether this essay writing is worth reading, or not. Even if the topic seems boring, there are always shocking statistics or interesting facts that will make any reader want to read an essay paper. But when picking unordinary information, make sure that it’s not detached from the main body of your essay writing.

Also, in introduction writing you provide background information for your essay paper and, which is even more important, your thesis. So don’t get swept away by some crazy facts that distract or confuse your readers. Try to be selective.

If you find a golden middle between being regular and being bizarre, a success of your essay paper is guaranteed.

I am attending a meeting in a day and it involves impromptu speeches that last 1-2 minutes. I am the coordinator for this meeting and need to ask the questions that the people will answer in their speeches. The topic of the day that all questions must pertain to is “science fiction”. So far I have asked what people’s favorite science fiction movie/TV show are and what technology in science fiction they would like in the world today. Do you have additional ideas for questions I could ask that people could answer?

I will award 10 points for the best question written that deals with science fiction.

Americans who advocate a non-interventionist foreign policy are often referred to as: â??isolationists.â? Like â??Democracyâ? and â??Republic,â? the terms â??Isolationistâ? and â??Non-interventionistâ? have become synonymous. In actually, there are substantive differences between the two terms and they should never be used interchangeably.

Isolationism dictates that a country should have no relations with the rest of the world. In its purest form this would mean that ambassadors would not be shared with other nations, communications with foreign governments would be mainly perfunctory, and commercial relations would be non-existent.

Isolationism is an impracticable worldview. It is important that the U.S. maintain relations with other countries especially when our direct vital interests are at stake. There are litanies of issues from logging rights to the abolition of nuclear weapons, to boarder disputes in which the U.S. must negotiate with its counterparts. Moreover, in order to achieve economic tranquility, commercial relations must be maintained and attenuated.

One-quarter of all U.S. jobs are dependent on exports. Severing commercial relations would likely lead the U.S. into another Great Depression. While some non-interventionists advocate tariffs and custom duties to protect American industries, few would seek the elimination of all foreign trade. A non-interventionist recognizes that the U.S. is inter-dependent on the global economy.

A non-interventionist supports commercial relations. In fact, in terms of trade, many non-interventionists share Libertarian proclivities and would unilaterally obliterate all tariffs and custom duties, and would be open to trade with all willing nations. In addition, non-interventionists welcome cultural exchanges and the exchange of ambassadors with all willing nations.

A non-interventionist believes that the U.S. should not intercede in conflicts between other nations or conflicts within nations. In recent history, non-interventionists have proved prophetic in warning of the dangers of the U.S. entangling itself in alliances. The U.S. has suffered deleterious effects and effectuated enmity among other governments, citizenries, and non-state actors as a result of its overseas interventions. The U.S. interventions in both Iran and Iraq have led to cataclysmic consequences.

In 1953, the U.S. and the British sponsored a coup against Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq after he nationalized oil fields. The Coup restored Mohammad Rez? Sh?h Pahlavi, the â??Shaw of Iranâ? to supremacy. Under the Shawâ??s iron-fisted rule, secret police tortured and killed political opponents. Fed-up with his oppressive rule, the supporters of fundamentalist Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini took power in 1979. Still inflamed at the U.S. for itâ??s role in the coup, Iranian students took 52 American diplomats hostage and held them for 444 days. Khomeiniâ??s successor, Ayatollahs Ali Khamenei, continues to excoriate the U.S. for its role in the coup, and the country celebrates â??Death To America Dayâ? on February 6 to mark the day the U.S. embassy was seized.

With this new Islamic Republic of Iran now an adversary of the U.S., the Reagan administration intervened on behalf of the truculent Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war. President Ronald Reagan subscribed to the strategically questionable philosophy that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Adopting such a strategy, Reagan â??de-listedâ? Hussein from the list of state-sponsors of terror, allowing Iraq to receive military and economic aid from the U.S. Subsequently, the Reagan administration approved covert transfers of howitzers, helicopters, bombs, and other weapons to Iraq in violation of the Arms Export Control Act of 1976. Concomitantly, the U.S. turned a blind eye toward the chemical weapons Hussein was using against the Iranians. In fact, Bell helicopters provided by the U.S. were used in the 1988 chemical attack on the Kurdish village of Halabja, leaving over 5000 Kurds dead. The Reagan administrationâ??s intervention prolonged the quagmire, which resulted in over one million deaths.

After the U.S. repelled Iraqâ??s incursion into oil-rich Kuwait in the 1990s, debilitating sanctions were placed on Iraq, leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. This, coupled with the aforementioned U.S. support of Saddam Hussein in his war against Iran, led to the unexpected acrimony the U.S. experienced when it invaded Iraq in 2003. In fact, a 2004 poll showed that anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr garnered a 67% favorable rating among Iraqis. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz deluded himself into thinking that U.S. troops would be greeted with â??rose pedals.â?

In 2003, non-interventionists warned about the potential blowback the U.S. could experience from an invasion and occupation of Iraq. While the jury is still out as to whether Iraq will become a constitutional republic in the cradle of civilization, in the long run, U.S. intervention might only be a pyrrhic victory. Al-Qaeda has been able to successfully use the secular occupation of a predominately Muslim country as a recruiting magnet.

Iraqi civilian deaths are estimated to be between 100,000 and 1,000,000. For every Iraqi killed in the crossfire, the U.S. risks their families and friends becoming at best hostile to the U.S. and at worst, suicide bombers trying to avenge for the deaths of their loved ones.

If the Iraq war is the central front on the war on terrorism, then even if the U.S. should win this battle, Al-Qaeda can claim victory in a larger context by exploiting the U.S. occupation to galvanize their followers while concomitantly recruiting new ones.

A non-interventionist believes the U.S. must remain vigilant in enfeebling Al-Qaeda and all who are trying to harm the U.S. But, a non-interventionist maintains that the U.S. should be cognizant of the problems and perils that our interventions abroad can cause. Currently, the U.S. has at least 761 military bases in 130 countries, and we continue to needlessly antagonize friends and foe alike. Non-interventionists have a profound respect for Thomas Jeffersonâ??sâ?? call for â??Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship with all Nations, Entangled Alliances with none.â?

There is an authentic and stark difference between Non-interventionism and Isolationism. Isolationism as a political philosophy or political strategy is not only impractical but probably suicidal. In a global economy, no industrialized nation can successfully sustain itself on the resources that it controls. Isolationism is a political philosophy that discourages relations with other countries. Alternatively, Non-interventionism maintains that foreign relations should be encouraged, but that nations should not become so involved with each otherâ??s affairs that they become entangled with each other. Non-Interventionists assert that intervention into the affairs of counterpart nations all too often results in unintended deleterious consequences and blowback, such as the U.S. learned when it intervened in the Middle East.

Sharing Some Writing Tips – “A Simple Recipe* for Writing
Success”

* That’s a metaphor, btw

“It’s easy being a writer… the hardest part is figuring how to
make a living, whilst one does so.”

“I got sick and tired of waiting for writing success… so just
carried on without it.”

“Writing to me is like gasoline to an automobile, without it I
would be immobilized.” Carla J. Curtis, The Inspirational
Literary Entrepreneur Author of Grip the Rope: Prayers for
Single Mothers http://www.trccommunications.com

Here is a short article in the form of a bit of advice for
aspiring writers, which I hope may be helpful.

My advice for aspiring writers* is as follows…

* What’s the definition of an aspiring writer? A waiter!

(Don’t worry, I was one too… though I spilt more than was left
in the glass; so no wonder I just had to carry on writing!

* Write something every day. Regularilty and practice makes
“purrfect”.

* “Remember that getting published takes a great deal of
commitment and hard work.

* Learn patience. Things move slowly in the world of publishing
- usually far longer than initial promises.

* Treat writing as your career; so take it seriously.

* Learn everything you can about the writing “business” and the
craft of writing creatively.

* Be open to criticism from your peers. Still far easier to
criticicise than create, eh? Incidentally, there has never been
a monument built honouring a critic!

* Listen to your heart, your intuition, the “core of your being”
(sounds “real airy-fairy stuff” that, Craig!). Write what you
love – not what the MARKET wants (unless you are desperate for
purely financial rewards from your writing). That’s not a “true
writer”, I believe!

* Join a writers’ association and mix with other strange
“arty-farty, airy-fairy intellectual types”.

* “Write as you talk yourself.” – Maeve Binchy.

* Write as honestly as you can. “I write because something
inside myself, inner and unconscious forces me to.” That is the
first compulsion. The second is one of ethical and moral duty. I
feel responsible to tell stories that inspire readers to
consider more deeply who they are.”

Writers help people to see the world differently- from the
writer’s perspective. Make your story real. Be totally honest to
the story that is being told. My “journey” of my various books
is my life journey.

Always remember,

* Writing is hard (and sustained) work – a writer has to work
hard every day, even when one does not feel inspired. So I make
sure I’m inspired at 7am each day.

* Small ideas become bigger, when you leave to your creative
subconscious mind. Seek inspiration (from within and or
externally from God, “the Ultimate Source”) regularly.

* Revise your work constantly; but one has to “call a halt”
sometime.

* Strive for perfection, but accept excellence in your writing.

* Believe in yourself and in the quality of your work. You have
something unique to offer the world: the gift of sharing.

Remember that dreams can come true in your writing… and in
your life.

Happy writing and good luck

Corporate Social Responsibility as defined by Wikepedia:

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), also known as corporate responsibility, corporate citizenship, responsible business, sustainable responsible business (SRB), or corporate social performance,[1] is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model. Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism whereby business would monitor and ensure their adherence to law, ethical standards, and international norms. Business would embrace responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere. Furthermore, business would proactively promote the public interest by encouraging community growth and development, and voluntarily eliminating practices that harm the public sphere, regardless of legality. Essentially, CSR is the deliberate inclusion of public interest into corporate decision-making, and the honoring of a triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.

As Wikipedia says, “the practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism. Proponents argue that there is a strong business case for CSR, in that corporations benefit in multiple ways by operating with a perspective broader and longer than their own immediate, short-term profits. Critics argue that CSR distracts from the fundamental economic role of businesses; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial window-dressing; others argue that it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations.”

It would seem that CSR is only intended for the multi million dollar corporations. Those making enough money to be able to afford to give back to the community and thus boost their PR and prevent the governments of their operating countries, from having to implement laws in ensuring they operate not to the detriment of the society and environment in which they operate. Weather or not this is so, I believe the Freelance Creative professional has an opportunity to exercise CSR with the use of Non Profit Organizations. Just like the large corporations, we can reap the benefits of CSR even though it is on a smaller scale.

We at GemGfx have adopted a policy of offering our high quality design services to Religious Organizations, Youth Clubs, Environmental Groups and other Non-Profit organizations with the intent of giving back to our community and using the process to get an unlimited amount of exposure and marketing.

The Benefits of CSR for the Freelancer:

Unlimited Public Relations:

By offering your creative services to non profit orgainzations, you have the opportunity to have your work put on display and recognized by many other organizations who support the non-profits. Most non profit organizations operate on sponsorship from large corporate entities or other business owners. When you as a freelancer, designs a flyer or an ad or a promotional website, your work will be put on display before these very individuals of these high profile corporations and you never know the question might be asked. “Who did the artwork for this production?”. You will have the opportunity to gain advertising that you ordinarily would have had to pay a fortune for.

Basically the more non-profit work you do, means the more advertising you get. A point should be made here, that the freelancer is responsible to put the same effort into the non profit job as he would the paying project. We at GemGfx make a point to exercise the same level of quality control, design expertise, and the highest level of professionalism on the jobs we do for non profits. We at GemGfx understands, that our work represents us, where ever it appears and must always be of the best quality. You cannot do a poor job just because your are not being payed in cash. The payment from the non profit project will return in contacts, and referrals.

Building Your Portfolio

I read in a post on Freelance Folder that doing work for non profits is an excellent way to build your portfolio. This is especially important for designers now starting out and have a shortage of clients. For the established freelancer, it is still an opportunity to further advance your skill set by giving yourself a new challenge. The non profit organizations offer a greater deal of freedom in the creative process as apposed to a paying client. The non profits welcome the gesture so they allow the freelancer to create. This the reason again for maintaining your professionalism and quality. If it is to become part of your portfolio, it must be consistent with the rest of the work that is already there.

There is no shortage of non profits, so there is no shortage of work and your portfolio will grow to a decent size in no time.

Building Your Brand and Reputation

Depending on the level of service, and quality of work you deliver, the non profit organizations you work for can become excellent referrals to whom you can call upon when you need a recommendation. Again the non profits are usually well connect and respected, and a recommendation from one of them, is more valuable at times than one from a well known company.

After a while, your brand of work and name will become recognized as one of integrity and quality and will be sought after by others who wish to do business with such an individual. If you fail to give the best possible effort on the job this could work in the reverse, and your name will not be as good in the community.

Dangers of Working for Non Profits

There is only one major danger that is worth mentioning, and that is, to ensure that the organization you are working for is in fact a non-profit organization and not a corporation masquerading as such. You will be faced with the situation where , dishonest companies would present themselves, or an event they are promoting under the non profit banner. When in fact they are going to be making a profit on the event or company and simply do not want to pay for the service. So it would be wise to do some checking of the organizations credentials before proceeding with a project.

In conclusion, we at GemGfx have embraced the CSR concept and are offering our services FREE and at discounted rates to all valid non profit organizations. Feel free to drop us a line if you are such an organization and are in need of quality Graphic Design Services.
