Nearly everyone who wants to be a writer looks at the fiction market as being the way to go – but another, vast market exists. What is it? Let’s find out.

The minute you mention that you’re a writer you nearly always get the same reaction. It goes something like this: ‘Do you write crime thrillers/science fiction/romance/spy stories etc .etc. etc.’ I was pleasantly surprised recently when someone I met at a writer’s circle said ‘I don’t write fiction.’ We had a very interesting conversation, the essence of which was this –

The fiction market is absolutely crammed with writers: established A-listers, journeyman B-listers and aspiring hopefuls or those with maybe just one or two minor pieces published. In other words – it’s a buyer’s market. That’s why this person writes factual books. Fiction publishers have their pick of the crop and can afford to be as choosy as they wish.

In a way you can’t blame them: the cost of promoting an unknown author can be very high indeed and publishers are a notoriously hard-headed bunch. After all, an editor of any publishing house is responsible to the owners for turning a profit. It’s a business, pure and simple.

Factual books are a different matter. I would not suggest for one moment that publishers of factual books – and they range from cookbooks to erudite tomes on some very rarified subjects – are any less business-oriented. It’s just that writers of such books are noticeably thinner on the ground than fiction writers, making the chances of publishing success that much more favourable.

Indeed, many fiction writers also write factual books. George MacDonald Fraser, the author of the hugely successful ‘Flashman’ series of fiction books, also wrote several factual (and entertaining) books such as ‘The Steel Bonnets’ and ‘Quartered Safe Out Here’. His ‘McAuslan’ series are a thinly-disguised autobiographical account of his time in the army and bridge the gap between fact and fiction.

What does this suggest? Perhaps that even such a successful fiction writer as Fraser discovered the market for factual books?

Whatever the reason for Fraser’s decision, the fact remains that books written about factual subjects sell. So how can you break into the market? First requirement: know your subject. This may seem obvious but you simply cannot write a factual book by picking up bits of knowledge from the internet and hoping to appear to be an expert. However, if you have been, let’s say, a financial analyst, or a pro football player, or maybe just a lifelong gardener, you may well be qualified to write a book.

Second requirement: know how to write. This is where a lot of would-be writers blow out their cheeks and adopt a rueful expression: ah, if only I could write . . .

If you simply cannot write, consider a ghostwriter. These are people who will turn your knowledge and expertise into a manuscript that will meet the requirements of publishers, yet put your name on the dustjacket. It may not be your ideal way of seeing you name in print but it’s an avenue to consider.

If, however, you possess the ability and the knowledge of your subject, why not try writing a factual book? Writing courses and classes are readily available and you might find you possess more ability than you thought! The market is there for you – go out and get a piece of it!

The web highway needs tons and tons of articles every single day. Articles are either free when you write your own articles, or can be obtained through a large number of freelance writers across the globe. Thus, the promotional costs are pegged at appreciably lower levels. How do we create these articles then? The article writing tips outlined below are designed to guide you through the process.

1. The topic

Do you have personal knowledge of the topic to describe the salient features in a cohesive manner? If you lack the knowledge, then you can use the search engines to provide you the resources. As a beginner, you would be better off writing on topics you are more comfortable with. For example, if you have good knowledge about automobiles, start off with automobile articles. This is among the best article writing tips you will ever get.

2. The content

Decide the length of the article you are writing and divide it into parts. Each part can ideally carry about 100 words. Set clear directions for each part and try to provide a sub-title also. Noting down the points on a piece of paper will help you to decide and follow a flow to make the reading uninterrupted.

3. Copyrights

To lift content from another source and claim it as your creation is called plagiarism. Search engines have efficient mechanisms to punish those who indulge in this practice. You can always draw resources and present the facts in your own words. Becoming an efficient writer may take a few weeks to even few months. But, focusing on quality rather than quantity is the greatest among article writing tips.

Still having a hard time knowing when to add “s” to form the plural of a noun? Unsure about what type of article to use when referring to a subject?

It is very astonishing to know that there are a lot of people who don’t have any idea on when to use the plural form of the noun and that which agrees with its corresponding verb. There are also times that you haven’t notice that you are using the wrong syntax in writing a sentence and that’s why it will lead you to a whole lot of mess especially when you are unto writing or when you’re dealing with other business-type people.

A statement is nothing without the correct verb agreement of the subject and of the predicate. If you happen to be one, you might as well recall with what you have learn during your elementary and secondary years.

If the above details problems that you need a grammar software to help you through, then you need to learn about count and non-count nouns. Basically, this property of nouns refer to whether they can be counted or not.

Nouns can be either plural or singular. Generally, these nouns do have a singular form and by adding “s” you can now its plural form. However, there are also nouns that remains in its singular form and can’t be added with “s” to form it into plural. This kind of nouns are called non-count nouns.

Definition Time

Count nouns are things that can be divided into smaller distinct units. Non-count nouns, on the other hand, refer to things that are regarded as a whole and cannot be broken up in parts.

A table, for instance, is a count noun (you can saw it off). Furniture (which refers to a collective whole), on the other hand, is a non-count noun. A book is a count noun; knowledge is a non-count noun. Rainstorm is a count noun while weather is a non-count noun. And so on.

Applications

Count nouns are words that can be pluralized by adding “s” at the end. Non-count, on the other hand, cannot have a plural form. Do note that some words in the English language are both count and non-count, depending on use, and can be pluralized with an “s”. Examples of these two-timing words include “light,” “sound,” and “problem.”

As for articles, non-count nouns can only be combined with the articles “the,” “this,” and “that.” Singular count nouns, on the other hand, can be used with “a,” “an,” “the,” “this” and “that,” while plural non-count can only be employed with “the,” “these” and “those.”

Aside from that, you can turn a noun-count noun with the help of adjectives and prepositions. This will form an adjective prepositional phrase. Take this for example; she donated ten bottles of milk for the babies.

Milk is a non-count noun. You can see how the adjective “ten” and “bottles” are place before the preposition “of” to make the noun “milk” into the plural form.

Don’t get confuse on when and how to use these kinds of nouns. Getting the appropriate knowledge about this stuff is quite useful for some other matters you didn’t expect.

Where is your article going to be published and what kind of people are going to read your piece? These article writing tips help in choice of writing style as that gives the reader an idea of your maturity and ideology. Worse, it can also give the impression of vapidity if you tend to be frivolous in your style of writing.

1. Formality

If you are writing to a young audience, an easygoing style is acceptable. An informal greeting and a joke are a good way to get interest. If the audience is young adult, you have to take care that your attempt at informality does not sound contrived. With an adult audience, the level of formality increases. Though you may start your article with an anecdote to garner attention, the body of your article must remain formal.

2. Friendliness

This is an important aspect of article writing tips. Children respond well to a friendly tone as do young adults. The friendliness should be tempered on the basis of choice of subject. If you are writing an article on animal training for a young audience, you can introduce them to the feelings of the animal in a way that they can relate to. With an older audience, it is better to state the facts about the animal’s feelings since the audience expects to be informed rather than get feelings drawn in.

3. Conciseness

This is the most important of article writing tips. No audience will stay with a written piece that rambles. Human concentration spans are short. If you do not capture reader interest with your introduction, you have lost the chance to be read.

Accordingly, the borderline between fantasy and science fiction is blurred, and many bookstores shelve science fiction and fantasy together. The science fiction genre has a strong fan community of readers and viewers, of which many authors are a part. In reading science fiction books, abstract concepts such as mutations, radiation, space travel and planets are experienced.

Although science fiction is often written primarily to entertain, many authors use the genre to provide insight into science, society, or the human condition. But science fiction is visionary by design and prophetic only by accident.

And yet the strange thing is, in some way, some real way, much of what appears under the title “science fiction” is true. Science fiction has ad a role in shaping public attitudes towards the atomic bomb during the fifties and sixties. Modern consciousness therefore is radically different from that of the peoples who inhabited the planet before the emergence of science fiction. America proved especially hospitable to science fiction, even before it acquired a name.

I am always looking at the effects of non slip rug pads on floors and rugs. A common issue among a certain quality of non slip rug pads is that the pad marks the floor with the actual design of the pad. This happens for a good reason, the reason being that this rug pad actually contains a spray, and is not real rubber or an organic material.

Although many non slip rug pads resemble each other, there are differences. By the way, this type of pad is also referred to as non skid, hold tight and grip it, just to name a few. Okay, the best non slip rug pad is either made with a natural rubber layer or is an organic polymer. These two types of carpet pad will not harm your floor and will last as long as they should. Real rubber is generally not harmful to wood and hardwood floors. If any marking does occur, it is usually due to the finish of the floor and not the fact that the rubber pad is defective.

Now about those other pads that look like quality pads but are truly just a temporary band-aid. These pads are either a plastic or nylon material that are sprayed with some sort of chemical to give them a non slip function. The main problem here is that in time, this spray wears off of the material and transfers to your floor. This is why we tend to see floors marked with some pads. Besides the fact that they mark the floor, they also loose their non slip function after a while.

My first choice in the best non slip rug pad is one that is a combination of jute and real rubber, not a spray. This pad is about 1/4 of an inch thick and the jute surface is needle punched recycled jute. Attached to this surface is the bottom layer of rubber, which in a quality pad is sewn on. You may see this non slip rug pad at http://www.rugpadcorner.com. Be careful of those pads where the latex rubber is sprayed on, as is very common these days to cut down on costs. This type of product will break down and mark your floors eventually, costing you far more than the savings in buying the pad in the first place. Choose one in which the jute is recycled and the rubber bottom is actually a layer of rubber. This is extremely important.

If you prefer a thinner pad, then my next safe choice is an organic polymer non slip rug pad. Here, what you see is what you get. There is no spray to cover anything up. This pad is 1/8 of an inch thick and is great at keeping rugs from sliding. Use this where height is an issue, such as in hallways with doors opening up over the rug.

These two best non slip rug pads require very little care. You may pass the vacuum over the jute and rubber one once in a while and you may pull up the organic one and air it outside once a year. Other then this, you can be assured that your rugs, your floors and your family are protected for years to come.

I have been in the area rug industry for several years. My expertise and experience is in rug restoration and preservation. You may view fine choices in rug pads at www.rugpadcorner.com
