I have to write a short story for lit.11 and it has to be a good gothic science/fiction topic. I can’t seem to have a good topic can SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!??

When developing a story or article, aspiring authors often hear this writing tip: learn to incorporate the “who,” “when,” “where,” and “how.” But what often gets overlooked is the “why.” Without examining why a story takes place, or why an article would be of interest to the reader, the entire writing experience can be a fruitless exercise.

* Why this character?

At a writing conference I once critiqued a manuscript featuring a character in a situation where you wouldn’t normally expect to find him. When I wondered why he was there, the author answered, “He just is.” “But how did he get there?” I asked. “One of the other characters put him there,” the author stated. “Why?” I pushed. The author didn’t have an answer.

If you arbitrarily think it would be cute to have a monkey, a doll, or a policeman as your story’s protagonist, the reader’s not going to care unless it makes sense to have that character inhabit your particular plot. And if a monkey shows up where he shouldn’t be–at school, for instance–why he’s there has to be an integral part of the story. But more than that, the reader has to know why this monkey is suddenly sitting in a first grade classroom. What’s unique about the character that makes him the only monkey who could possibly appear in this book?

* Why this story?

Just as important as knowing why your character inhabits your book is understanding why this character experiences the conflict or problem that fuels the plot. Your readers have to believe this protagonist would encounter these obstacles, and not be able to resolve the problem in a few lines of text. Not every child is afraid of the dark, so if your character hides under the covers when the lights are out, plant something in her personality that causes this behavior.

How the plot conflict is resolved also harks back to “why.” Why does your character take these particular steps, instead of an easier or more obvious route, to reach his goal? What fears, hang-ups or quirks does the character have to overcome to get what he wants? Would a child understand and care about these traits? Have you laid the groundwork in the beginning of the story so the reader believes the character could not possibly act any other way, thus never forcing the reader to question you in the first place?

* Why this article?

Virtually any nonfiction topic can hold a child’s interest if it’s presented in the right way. But first ask yourself why you’re writing this article or book. Does it have a direct application to the experiences of your readers? Can it tie in with what they’re learning in school? Will it enrich their lives in some way? If your motivations are clear, then take a hard look at your audience. Why would kids this age be interested in this topic? How can you present the material in a way that’s entertaining as well as informative? If you find you’re working hard to shape the information to fit a specific audience or format, perhaps you need to rethink your approach. Maybe you’re trying to write too young, and the subject really requires an older reader. Or perhaps you assume middle graders will be fascinated with an animal alphabet book, but after researching other ABC books on the market, you learn they’re really targeted to much younger children.

I have to write a science fiction story for my language class. I would appreciate if you could give me some ideas about how I should start. Thanks so much!

These lyric writing tips will help you to write more comfortable, natural-sounding lyrics.

A contemporary lyric should sound conversational, and not forced. Here are a few ways to get you started writing better lyrics.

1. Write the story in prose.

Before you attempt to write in song form, write your idea as a short story. Include visual descriptions, things your characters might say, and even their names if you want.

Don’t worry about rhyme or meter. The goal is to tell the story, to say exactly what you want to say.

Stay on the subject you’ve chosen until you have a beginning, a middle and an ending. It doesn’t have to be very long. Remember your song only needs a couple of verses, a chorus, maybe a bridge.

When you’re happy with what you have written it’s time to turn it into a lyric.

2. Write the lyric without rhyme.

Begin writing your lyric, but don’t worry about making it rhyme just yet. Simply tell your story in lyric form. If you’re thinking too much about rhyming at this point, you may not say just what you want to say.

You want to be able to write it with freedom.

Once you have your verses planned out then you can start looking at how you might rhyme them. Use a rhyming dictionary to help you. You can also open your thesaurus to look for just the right synonyms.

And remember, you don’t HAVE to rhyme. Rhymes are very useful for helping to hold the lyric together, and to help us remember the words. And they can sound clever and cool.

But be careful not to make it rhyme just because you think it should.
Don’t risk twisting the meaning of your song just to force a rhyme.

3. Speak it out loud.

Once you’ve finished your song give yourself a pat on the back! It doesn’t mean you’re finished but do it anyway. You deserve it.

Now before you go any further, speak it out loud. How does it sound? Do people speak that way? How does it feel? Are there any parts that are awkward or uncomfortable? I’m not talking about subject matter. I’m talking about the natural flow of the words.

You want your song lyrics to sound as natural and conversational as possible. Once they do, you know you’re onto something good!

recording studio, and am active in pitching my songs to music publishers.

Here are some memoir writing tips. The telling of stories is at least as old as the tribal campfire. In stories we commiserate we enlighten we instruct. We pass along traditions and secure history. We ask questions and conjure up answers. The memoir perhaps the original storyline genre, is becoming very popular these days.

With the turn of the millennium and the rise of technology, both of which threaten to separate us from our pasts, maybe we find comfort in the stories of our personal lives and in the preservation of our histories. But something else is at work here too, when we write our pasts we also write the present and the future.

The act of writing the act of giving voice to our experiences, thoughts and feelings, changes how we are in the moment and how we move forward. When the past is securely nailed to the page, we can use it as an anchor while we adventure into the rest of our lives into even the unfathomable twenty first century.

Much of the material we need for our memoir we carry in our heads and in our hearts. By definition our memoirs are composed of memories; our memories. A full bodied memoir however is likely to reach beyond the bounds of our personal experience.

It will likely place our experience in the perspective of the times, places and people of the original moments. Doing research looking for information outside of our memories can also inspire refreshed memories and fuller ones.

When you get together with your siblings, you will be surprised how much you remember about an incident when each of you spins your own version of it. The best memoir writing tips you can take advantage of however is to remember to have fun writing it.

According to Wikipedia, science-fiction is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology. There are many movies featuring events, gadgets, creatures and people that are very unlikely to encounter, meet or happen in real life. But as time passes by and science and technology keep on advancing and improving, many elements which are considered belonging to science-fiction movie are now coming to life.

The most popular science-fiction elements are extraterrestrials. In this category we have E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounter and Independence Day. It’s still unclear if there is life on other planets despite many claims of UFO sightings, alien encounters, abductions and let’s not forget The Roswell Incident. NASA detected what seems like methane on Mars’ atmosphere which means possible life on the planet. – I hope that they look like us and not small, green with big headed people, coz that would bring back nightmares which will turn out to be real this time. What I fear most if there is life on Mars that for some stupid earthling reason we’ll decide to attack them and turn this into Earth Attack. I hope that the Mars mission won’t turn into Capricorn One.

One of the most beautiful magical science-fiction elements is space traveling. There is a 1902 black and white silent French movie titled Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A trip To The Moon). Boy, that movie must have seemed so silly and unbelievable back then – The trip part, not all the freaky stuff that happened up there – until July 20th 1969 when man first walked on the moon. Now, not anyone can go to space unless you’re an astronaut –Duh! – a star, wealthy or a VIP. There some companies such as Virgin Galactic, one of Richard Branson s’ Virgin Group corporations, which will be offering spaceflight to passengers. But it doesn’t come cheap, the first 500 flights are between $200,000 and $100,000 – Seems like only some of the people mentioned above will be able to afford them – and the next ones, $20,000 – Start saving.

Another science-fiction element is disaster. The type where the earth or mankind is about to disappear – I wonder which animal would miss us the most – and someone has to set up to save humanity; or some kind of disease and survival of the fittest comes back in style. We have Armageddon, I Am Legend and The Day After Tomorrow. The real life natural event which easily comes to mind is global warming. Temperatures are rising, ice in the artics is melting, pollution is on the increase and animals are going instinct. If Mars is unoccupied and that it is possible that earthling can live on it, I hope that we will take better care of it.

Huge scary monsters destroying everything and terrifying everyone are also science-fiction elements. The most popular ones are King Kong and GodZilla. In a decade or two, monsters 16 feet tall and weighting 6 to 12 tones may be walking amongst us. I’m talking about Manfred’s brothers and sisters. Yes, mammoth. Scientists have found wolly mapped with mammoth DNA which they intend to use to clone mammoths; like in Jurassic Park. Mammoth went extinct because of food scarcity and rise in temperature. With Global warming and the increase of food price, I wonder how and where they will live. Good thing that they were herbivore.

The technology in science-fiction movies always makes us dream and wonder if it will one day come to life. The dreamiest are flying cars like in The Jetsons and The Fifth Element. I’m going to be honest and say that it is one invention I though won’t be coming around any time soon, but turns out that I was wrong thanks to Parajet Skycar. It drives like a car and flies like a plane. Don’t get carried away yet. The flying car hasn’t been tested yet but there are plans of it flying from London to Timbuktu by the end of January.

Last but not least, we have robots and artificial intelligence. There are many movies such as I, Robot and Terminator which feature metals held together with bolts and nuts looking and behaving like human beings. We also happen to have some in real life like the robot suit which can assist people by lifting heavy loads and assist people with disabilities climb stairs and the kitchen assistant robot which can take care of house chores and robotics pets (mostly dogs).

So far, there isn’t any time travel machine – that I have heard of – like in Back To The Future and that’s probably for the best because whichever individual or country manages to create one will most probably use it to change history in their advantage or maybe even make it worse.

A few days ago, a US Airways plane which was bird stroked, an engine caught fire and crash-landed into the Hudson River. All the passengers and crew survived. Everyone believes that it is thanks to the pilot and hero Robert Bea who handled the situation amazingly. Now if this was in a movie, it would have been seen as a great plot, exaggerated and not likely to happen. Now that it has, if the crash appears in a movie, people will say “Great just like the landing on the Hudson River.” But the movie won’t leave such a big mark in viewers mind because it has already happened.

I wonder if gathering the courage to throw shoes at a world leader should be consider as a science-fiction event come true.

We all use non-verbal communication, sometimes without realizing that we are doing so, for example the way we stand or sit our posture, our facial expression, our mannerisms; we may nod or wink etc all forms of non-verbal communication.

As typically developing individuals we learn naturally how to detect and read other peoples non-verbal communication.

A baby learns that its mother will come when they cry. A toddler learns that by putting their arms up they will get picked up. A child learns how to get their parents attention or their own way! A teenager realizes how another person may feel about them from their body language…and so on as we grow our ability to read non-verbal communication increases.

However with autism non-verbal communication skills are not naturally learnt and therefore they will need to be taught these skills directly.

One of the most significant non-verbal communication skills is that of reading faces in autism this skill is missing and where as a typically developing youngster may interpret a knowing wink or frown, an autistic child will not.

Social and communication deficits are very common with autism and this is where many social blunders are made, un-knowingly an autistic child can land themselves in some pretty hot water without even realizing they have, especially in the teenage years this can lead to social isolations and anxieties.

Parents know and trust autism resources like social skills stories for helping with issues like reading faces in autism as well as teaching autism non-verbal communication skills.

Social skills stories were first introduced as a means of teaching autism non-verbal communication skills around twenty years ago by therapist Carol Gray.

Gray realized that autistic kids tend to be visual learners and therefore developed a system where social and communication skills could be honed and taught through the use of images and appropriate language.

Social skills stories have developed over the years and are now widely used by parents, teachers and professionals as a means of teaching autism non-verbal communication skills as well as social skills and behaviors, with tremendous successes. So much so that social skills stories are one of the main resources available for helping and teaching autistic kids to learn and remember social and communication skills.

Autism non-verbal communication skills greatly improve with the use of social skills stories, written by experts using first person language, appropriate text and visually rich social skills stories can be downloaded from expert run sites such as www.autismsocialstories.com and implemented quickly and efficiently. This site offers great customer support and advice as well as immediate download of 100 social skills stories which help with issues such as autism non-verbal communication skills as well as teaching social and communication skills like reading faces in autism.
