In sci-fi/fantasy, the only rules are the rules YOU make up. In other words, toasters don't talk to each other normally, but in YOUR story they certainly could. Dragons don't exist normally, but in YOUR story they can. Heck, combine the 2 and make fire-breathing toaster/dragons!! The idea is that you are completely free to make up whatever you want...as long as it stays SORT OF believable. For example, fire-breathing toaster/dragons are a LITTLE out there, but you could make them MORE believable by telling readers that these things were the robotic offspring of flamethrowers and toaster ovens back in the machine revolution of 2092...WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! Use your imagination to create a little world of your own and populate it with creatures, people, and things of your own choosing.
