“I’ll figure that out . . . when I get the time.”
“I really don’t know how to start!”
“I really should write my research paper!”

This common dilemma is expressed over and over again by many people everywhere. The good news is that anybody can write a research paper!

There are three main reasons for research papers:

1. To help you to piece together information from different sources and cohesively put it back together.

2. To help you develop good written and oral communication skills.

3. To help you to figure out how to find information.

Not knowing how to write properly can make your academic life disorganized, stressful and chaotic. By improving your writing skills, you can confidently and quickly finish assignments and write properly throughout your professional career. Writing a research paper can be very simple when you follow these basic steps:

1. Choose or Brainstorm Your Topic: Sometimes a topic is given to you, or you may have your own topic that you would like to research. You may be forced to conduct your research with very little direction. Sometimes you are only given a page count, number of sources and a deadline. It is helpful to begin by brainstorming a topic. Writing down a few ideas can be very helpful, and lead you in a certain direction.

2. Determine the Scope: Once you’ve scanned the internet or library and learned a little more about your topic, you need to determine whether you need to broaden or narrow your focus.

3. Research: By now you have an idea of your topic and have scanned the subject area. You have a focus for your research paper, but you also need details to “flesh out” the paper. Start going to your resources, and taking notes on sections that may be pertinent to your paper. Remember to document where you got the research from! This usually includes noting the author’s name, title of book, paper or website, year of publication, publishing house, page numbers and/or date accessed.

4. Outline Your Paper: An outline is an organized plan for your paper. Develop an outline by starting the first section with a broad introduction of the topic, then list several sections that you have read about (or will read about) that pertain to your topic. The general sections are: introduction, literature review, data collection, results and discussion. Writing an outline will help you to feel better about writing your research paper because you will have a sense of organization and direction after you write it.

5. Create the First Draft: The first draft should be written after you have completed your research. By this point, you will probably have numerous sources and many pages of notes written down from each of these sources. You should have enough information to write the entire paper. It is important “just to start writing”, and not to worry too much about the details at this point.

6. Revise, Revise, Revise! Revision of a paper should actually take longer than writing the first draft. This is the time to clean up all of the grammatical mistakes, spelling, run-on sentences, etc, and to make this paper easily readable. This is also the time to add or subtract text when necessary.

7. Proofread: This is the time for nit-picky editing to insure that there are no mistakes. Some things to watch for are: correct verb tenses, punctuation, grammar, spelling, word choice and proper citation. Other details that may be important are: page numbers, correct spacing and correct margins.

8. Creating a PDF: Some professors now want you to sent them a file in a PDF format so they can read it not matter what software you created in. Go to adobe.com to accomplish this and don’t forget to use an adobe promotion code to get a discount.

By breaking your research paper into small tasks, you can stay focused on the goal of completing it quickly and meticulously!

Question: What would you do if you turned to the back of the last page of the bible and a note fell out that said…?
“Hello there mortal of the future. You are very fortunate to find this bible we have hidden the truth in for so long. The previous pages of this book is just a myth made up by slavery loving, sexist, homophobic, blood thirsty old men who wanted to control anyone who was not fortunate enough to be born with a brain. There are really no talking snakes, talking donkeys, magical trees, unicorns, giants, people living for a thousand years or any of that. We made it up to fool the people in the future generations and our plan has succeeded greatly! If you find this message, don’t bother warning the Christians because by the time they make it to this page, they would already be too brainwashed to tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction.”

Deepest regards.

Question: Is This A Good Science Fair Project?
So last year my Science Fair project made it all the way up to the State Competition with the question “Do Younger Students Comprehend Better On Fiction Or Non-Fiction ?” . I just used two books (one fiction, one non) and read each, then backed it up with quizzes about each of the books. This year I really want to get to at least State again, it was SO much fun ! So my new project is going to go like this.. I’m going to write a short 3 page story about a random person, but not write the ending. I already know the ending though. Then get a bunch of different people from different generations and let them read the story and tell me what they think the outcome will be of the person’s life. Is this a good idea ? What should I title it ? And how can I make the project answer a question like my old one ? I’m in 8th this year btw.

Answer:

Answer by Little Miss Lacrosse!
Well, i like the idea, It shows how people from different generations view an outcome when it is not presented to them. Maybe you could call it “Foreshadowing From The Generations” or something like that? Not the best name but it is a great idea. It is a great thing to be interested in science, and I’ll be wishing you to State!

Question: I am looking for a book. Can you help?
I do not know the name, only details of the book… It may sound stupid I am looking so hard for it, but to own it again holds great sentimental value to me. My grandmother gave me this book when I was 11 and it got me through years of hell with my abusive mother and after my grandma passed away 8 years ago, I lost the book and can not find it. Any who,

Any help would be appercaited, and Thank you ahead of time!

The book was about angels, a Hardcover picture had Cherub angels on the front and the book was filled with “non-fiction” short stories about guardian angels. I remember one story being about a mother who had to run back into her home for something leaving her 2 children in the car and a stranger appearing to stop the car as it rolled backwards down hill towards a lake and then the stranger disappeared. I cant recall any others but I would be so happy if someone could help me find this book or maybe remembers it from their childhood, it would mean alot to me. Thank you!

Hello, Nicole

I read your message and I couldn’t help but feel moved; so I gave up doing my english assignment and went for a bit of web-searching. Although I have not read the book you have described, I have found a possible match: it has a green cover (hardback) and has four cherubs peeking from behind the border of the image. It was published in 1996, so I guess it is of the right age.

Question: Can anyone help – Benefit Cosmetics??
I’m thinking of trying out Benefit’s “Non-Fiction” liquid makeup.
There is no Benefit makeup counter anywhere really near where I live, so I would have to order off their website. I was browsing the shades. I’m very fair skin, and I can’t decide which colour would be more suitable for me – Light Beige or Cool Beige (i think that’s what they are called), Volume 1 or Volume 3. Anyway the website is www.benefitcosmetics.com so if anyone has any suggestions please help. Also what you think of this brand?? Thanks.

Question: Need help publishing my first book?
Ok…
I’ve finished my first book, and the first question I have is in reference to category. It’s a short story, based on a real life experience I had, but some of the details (and names) have been altered a bit to avoid self-incrimination. I’m guessing “non-fiction” is ok?

My other questions are:
What are the steps to publishing?
Do I get the ISBN first?
Where do I get the ISBN?
What is a POD book?
Any suggestions or tips from people who have recently published a book?

I’m kind of nervous about the whole thing, but it’s a good book, and it’s dedicated to the homeless, so I am anxious to get it out.

Thanks for any & all help :)
NOTE: My book has 11 chapters, with a total of 15,912 words.

Answer:

Answer by say ‘no’ to stop signs
If it’s a short story you won’t publish it as a book, you won’t need an agent, and there won’t be an ISBN.

Buy a copy of Writer’s Market and submit to the appropriate venue.

PS The second answerer is thinking of novels.

Question: How do you know?
This is a question asked often by emergent church participants. If it would help Psalm 94 answers this question for some. Without trying to offend anyone and in the most amiable tone, I am interested in your answers from any religion. For instance Carlos Castaneda once wrote that, and I paraphrase, Man and crows were the only creatures with the ability to know. Carlos Castaneda was an anthropologist and wrote many “non-fiction” books in the 1970′s. This question is not difficult to answer, but please don’t, if you don’t think that it is serious. For everyone answering just for the points, well I do it to. If you do answer just for the points and don’t answer the question…be nice and let’s get those answers in the public eye. Put aside for instance, what you think of me and my question. This doesn’t have to turn into a bar room brawl.

Well, I can’t quite get what you might be asking, but I’m going to throw this out there and see if it makes sense and if I grasped your question.

First of all, I am not religious, although I am spiritual. I find religion to be too rigid. However, I digress.

For me, I can honestly say that I “know” just by a certain sense that tells me so. I believe it’s what most of us refer to as instinct. Feeling from the gut.

I have experienced it many times. It’s being in tune with what is around you. It’s so hard to explain except to have the absolute thought before you that you cannot shake.

There is a difference between thinking you know and actually knowing. One still leaves doubt in your mind that you can argue. The other, no matter what you hear, you know to be true and you don’t think otherwise.

It always proves itself thus.

Did I make ANY sense?

Question: To my fellow Atheists: Does all the hype about Nostradamus….?
Does all the latest TV programing about Nostradamus’ “lost” drawings and writings cause as much concern to you as to me?

I don’t know how many times I have turned on the TV only to find some pseudo-scientist trying desperately to correlate these “lost” items with all the other apocalyptic visionaries’ dooms dates. (What a mouthful!) Needless to say, 2012 is the favored date.

Now, I usually watch Discovery, Science, History, and other “non-fiction” channels. But, I can’t help think they are giving in to the sensational nature of such programming.

Do you think all the hype is adding fuel to the Christians’ fire who are predicting the end of the world in the near future? Is it legitimizing their claims? The thought sickens me.
Hey! I’m NOT believing all that baloney!!! Never have! I’m just trying to see if anyone is sick of hearing about it all the time. So far, there are just a few appropriate answers. I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in magical thinking. What don’t you understand about that? (rolling my eyeballs and getting a bit irritated)

If it seems like I’m making a big deal about this, then you don’t know me.

Question: What type of genre is this?
I’m working on classifying some books for my classroom. Each book will be labeled with a label that reads “Fiction” or “Non-Fiction” and then underneath of that i am writing more specific titles of genre. For example, one of the books is about a girl who lives in colonial times. Therefore, the label says “Fiction” and underneath I have “Historical Fiction”.

The book I’m currently making a label for a book that is just a girl’s diary entries about moving to the city. It is fiction, but i’m looking for the specific category to put underneath.

thanks for your input.

Question: Do people take fundie author Tim LaHaye seriously?
I have read a couple of his “non-fiction” books where he dissects the book of Revelations in the Bible and his claims are scary. He uses scriptures to back himself up but his interpretations are taken out of context and grasping at straws. He also claims that currently the center of the universe is Rome and is full of evil due to that “because the Bible says so” as well as the idea that Catholics are not Christian no matter what they claim otherwise. He comes across as instead of “I think” or “I believe” but rather “this is how it is because God says so and you’re destined for hell if you believe otherwise”.

Unfortunately I do know a couple people who take his claims to be the gospel truth, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. But is that how most religious people think or are they much more skeptical?

Answer:

Answer by Farsight
I, being Catholic, could never take him seriously.

Point this out to those people you know –

They no doubt believe that the Catholic Church is the whore of babylon spoken of in Revelation. The problem with this is that the Catholic Church does not sit on seven hills. The “center” of the Church, which most would consider the Vatican sits on one hill, which is not one of the seven that make up Rome. So how can the Church be said whore? It can’t.
