Question by spcexcel: A good book to read? Something more “non” than “fiction” ?
I’m looking for a good book to read that was written in the last 10 years. I’m mostly looking for things that are a little more on the “non-fiction” side than just totally common crime novels, but not necessarily 100% biographical etc.
Example: I recently read What Is the What (a novel – slash – biography) based on the true story of a Sudanese refugee. However, occasionally I have enjoyed an intellectually stimulating crime novel (not just your average paperback trash).
Suggestions? Interested especially in learning about anything not based on the US – some other interesting part of the world? thanks.

The man who wrote that, David Eggers, also wrote “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” which one the pulitzer prize i believe. It was voted the best book of the decade, so you should definitely read it.

Question by Nathan: What’s a good thesis statement for a history essay on slavery and abolition?
First off, may I say that I don’t need any factual help on slavery and abolition; I’ve been studying up on it for months. My problem is solely with coming up with a compelling (or even usable!) thesis statement for the essay I’m writing.
I’m working on a slavery/abolition essay, which I can write no problem by the deadline at midnight — but what I really need is a thesis statement. My main problem is that It has to be in the form of an argument, but I don’t know how to argue about something as factually and morally clear-cut as the wrongness of slavery and the rightness of abolitionist thinking. Here is my instructor’s guidance:
1. Examine the institution of slavery in the United States and the abolition movement that followed it.
– Discuss the effect of slavery on society in the North and South, the slaves, and the slave-owning families
– Examine the major motives and basic arguments for the abolition movement and the outcome for slaves and women.
Under “tips,” she writes:
- Your thesis statement must be a point that is going to guide your whole paper and is an argument.
- Provide specific examples to back up your ideas. Make sure that you then explain why those specific examples back up your argument.
Can anyone sling some quick or free-form ideas on what angle I can take in presenting this information? Thank you.

Perhaps how the blacs were the obvious slaves, but how the owners were also slaves to an institution that brutalized them all

I’m trying to think of some good posters to put in my dorm room next year. So far I’ve got some Boondock Saints, Pulp Fiction, etc. But I want some funny ones and some sexy ones too, so if you can provide a picture of the best one you get 10 points just like that.
I am tired of reading mindless authors like Tom Clancy and Damiel Steele. I would like to read a book that I can learn somthing from but do not know where to start. I am not against novels I just want some that make me question things. Non-fiction is also good.
I am working on a fiction paper, but I am limited to 5-6 pages. So far I have 4 pages about 2 girls getting stranded in Pennsylvania after having the worst weekend of their lives and their car broke down. any suggestions on a good ending? Thanks for the help!
For my English class, we have to read a non-fiction book. So I decided I wanted to read a book about the Holocaust. I’ve read Anne Frank, and it was ok, and I’ve read Night, and found it very interesting. Are there any other Holocaust books similar to Night that are non-fiction?
I want to get into this really good and prestigious preparatory school for high school and I know that on the application they ask you what books you have read lately. I want to be able to say that I have read really mature books (on serious subjects with more advanced vocabulary), unlike the books I usually read. Any suggestions?
(Fiction or non-fiction, it doesn’t matter.)
