Question: I am having trouble remembering the name of an “African American fiction” novel i read about 6-7 yrs ago?
in the story i remember a woman having sex with a man on valentine’s day and later finding out that she is pregnant. she is a teacher at some sort of private school and when she has a parent teacher meeting for an obnoxious child the man she slept with turns out to be the child’s father and HE IS MARRIED. the woman eventually leaves this job and finds a new one where she makes new and supportive friends (one being a man who thinks he’s some kind of player and himself the unborn child’s godfather) later on it turns out that the child’s father is a drug dealer or something of that sort. also throughout the story the woman has a friend or ex (not sure) who she is close with and also supports her through all her drama and who she probably ends up with in the end (can’t remember)… Any help??? lol

Question: Do you read more of “the classics”, or more “modern fiction”, or a mix of the two?
and by “the classics”, I don’t necessarily mean old, I mean books with widely-acknowledged literary importance.

I like to switch it up between the two. To Kill a Mockingbird is a good choice all around in my opinion though.

Question: Which fiction “genre” is like pulling teeth to get you to read?
And, did you find a book in that genre that you ended up really enjoying?

Answer:

Answer by the_lipsiot
Courtroom “thrillers”……….can’t get on with them.

I find them boring and formulaic, and I don’t enjoy the films either.

I’ve tried John Grisham, as everyone says he is the best in the field, but I don’t like his either.

Question: I saw the movie, read the book, why is the Davinci Code so controversial?
I think too many religious zealots are showing their ignorance. I mean why this, why now? There have been many other books and movies that suggest alternative views to the origins of Christianity that claim to be “NON FICTION”. Davinci Code CLEARLY states, “This is a work of fiction”. Do schools no longer teach what the word “fiction” means anymore? I mean , it is sooo obvious the people condeming the book/movie have not read the book or seen the movie. It was an excellent movie. I never even noticed how long it was (about 2 1/2 hours), it was so good.

So, I am wondering if the Catholics are trying to bring more attention to the movie? Or do they REALLY have something to hide? I mean, afterall, it is fiction… so what are they so worried about?

Negative attention is better than no attention, right?

This is like free advertizing for them…

Question by Altair 1: I just finished reading “Crimes Against Liberty”. Have any of you Liberals read it yet?
David Limbaugh breaks it all down for ya. He makes it very clear and it is well documented. You will find it on the “Non-fiction” shelf. I know that facts make you people break out with some sort of rash but this read will make you feel better knowing what is going to happen in November and why.
Namast and Maxmom – Good excuses for you filure to learn. You both no doubt are loyal 0bama lemmings. You criticize work you haven’t even read. Typical 0bama lemmings.

George Bush had his cronies in the Justice Department write memos granting legal approval to ignore constitutional rights, including First Amendment freedoms of speech and the press and Fourth Amendment requirements for search warrants.

That’s crimes against liberty.

Question by WWTSD?: Remember the “Baby’s First Bible” Laptop Jesus found? Did anyone read the reviews?
They’re umm.. they’re interesting.

“Wholly boring, not Holy!: Woah! Boring alert! I don’t know if you guys have heard of this book, but it is VERY long and boring. It also seems like a lot of stuff is definitely made up so I don’t know why it’s in the “non-fiction” section. Basically, this man Jesus is amazing. That’s the whole story. But it goes on and on and on unnecessarily! “Joseph begat Abraham, Abraham begat Isiah…” on and on. Some editing would have definitely helped.”

I send this to some friends… Part of me wonders if THEY posted the reviews. ;p

Question by spcexcel: A good book to read? Something more “non” than “fiction” ?
I’m looking for a good book to read that was written in the last 10 years. I’m mostly looking for things that are a little more on the “non-fiction” side than just totally common crime novels, but not necessarily 100% biographical etc.

Example: I recently read What Is the What (a novel – slash – biography) based on the true story of a Sudanese refugee. However, occasionally I have enjoyed an intellectually stimulating crime novel (not just your average paperback trash).

Suggestions? Interested especially in learning about anything not based on the US – some other interesting part of the world? thanks.

The man who wrote that, David Eggers, also wrote “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” which one the pulitzer prize i believe. It was voted the best book of the decade, so you should definitely read it.

Yes. Unless it’s just too badly written.

I am sixteen years old and really want to become a doctor. What books would you recommend for me to read in order to broaden my knowledge of medicine and medical school. Can be about past or present medicine, fiction or non-fiction anything at all really.
Thank-you.
