I know that English or Creative Writing are good, obvious choices. But are there any other, unique and interesting ones that would be good. Or is English by far the way to go?

Psychology…it can really help you get into the minds of your characters…or sociology or anthropology. English is great though. Maybe major in English and minor in another subject?

    Journalism

You’ll probably find that many successful writers didn’t take college classes in any discipline directly related to writing. English Literature classes will generally teach you how to analyse and critique the existing canon of literature rather than how to write. Creative Writing teaches writing techniques, but many good authors would say that nobody can teach a writer how to write well – it comes naturally.

Writers come from all kinds of backgrounds. Follow your interests.

English, by far, unless your genre is historical or science fiction, or fantasy.
